Oil-Free Hummus [Vegan, Gluten-Free]
Oil-Free Hummus Has All the Flavor and Minimal Fat
Hummus is one of my all time favorites and it’s a big hit with the kids. The problem with traditional hummus is that it’s loaded with fat from the olive oil. This oil free hummus recipe is just as delicious as the oil laden variety, but much better for your health! Enjoy in a wrap, as a veggie dip or as a sandwich spread. It’s so easy and delicious. You can’t go wrong.
Making Oil Free Hummus Couldn’t Be Easier
To make your healthy oil free hummus all you need is the simple ingredients and a high speed blender. You can either make your chick peas or use them from a can. I prefer to make mine because it is much more cost effective to buy dried beans. If you’re using them canned, they are about a dollar a can. With a family of six healthy hummus eaters, I have to make a whole bunch, so it makes more sense to buy dried beans.
How To Prepare Dried Chick Peas
If you choose to prepare the chick peas like me, they are very simple to cook. Pour your bag of chick peas into a large pot and cover with water. The water level should be at least 2 inches above the beans. Bring to a boil and let the beans boil on high for 20 minutes. Then lower the heat to a simmer, partially cover with a lid and boil for another hour and 45 minutes. I place the lid on and then offset it a little bit so the steam can escape. You will need to monitor the water level and add water when it gets too low. After an hour and 45 minutes test your chick peas to make sure that they are soft. When they are soft drain them and set the chick pea water to the side. Now you are ready to make your hummus.
Using Filtered Water Vs. Chick Pea Water
If you choose to use chick peas from a can, you can drain the chick peas and set the chick pea water aside to use in the recipe in place of filtered water. If you are preparing your own chick peas, drain the chick peas and set the chick pea water aside to use in the recipe in place of filtered water. If for some reason you don’t have any chick pea water, go ahead and use regular filtered water. The oil free hummus will come out just fine with filtered water.
